Driving Independent Innovation of Domestic PET/CT Technology Through Medicine-Engineering Integration, Industry-University-Research-Medical Cooperation, and Clinical Demand Orientation
Dr. Zhang Hui’s research focuses on diagnostic and therapeutic imaging technologies represented by PET and CT imaging, including medical imaging physical mechanisms, imaging chains and core components, and imaging algorithms. Meanwhile, the research team is committed to promoting the integration of molecular imaging with robotic surgery and deep learning technologies, advancing the clinical application of integrated diagnosis-therapy precision molecular imaging.
PET/CT is one of the most advanced clinical imaging devices currently available, playing an indispensable role in the clinical diagnosis and treatment pathways of major diseases such as tumors, central nervous system disorders, and cardiovascular diseases. In collaboration with the Department of Nuclear Medicine, Peking Union Medical College Hospital, Dr. Zhang has been dedicated to the R&D and industrialization of high-end domestic PET/CT since 2011. By leveraging medicine-engineering integration and industry-university-research-medical cooperation, the team drives independent innovation of domestic PET/CT based on clinical needs.
The developed time-of-flight PET/CT products have reached or exceeded the level of international mainstream products in terms of performance indicators and clinical image quality. Pioneering technologies such as free-breathing imaging and passive quality control have also become leading technologies in the industry. To date, the products have obtained two National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) medical device registration certificates and one CE Certificate, been included in the 5th Batch of "Excellent Domestic Medical Equipment" catalog, and received support from the National Key R&D Program of China (13th Five-Year Plan) for Digital Diagnosis and Treatment Special Project’s domestic high-end medical equipment application demonstration program.
Additionally, the next-generation PET/CT products under development have once again achieved international leading performance indicators. Supported by the National Key R&D Program of China (13th Five-Year Plan) for Digital Diagnosis and Treatment Special Project’s PET core component R&D program, the team has realized domestic production of SiPM core components and ASIC chips for readout circuits, truly achieving independent control from the complete machine to core components.
Up to now, nearly 20 units of the developed PET/CT products have been installed in medical institutions at all levels, including Peking Union Medical College Hospital and Beijing Friendship Hospital, completing more than 50,000 clinical patient scans. The products have gained widespread recognition from industry experts and medical institutions.
