  • Research and Product Development in Auditory System Testing, Rehabilitation, and Cognitive Engineering

    She has long focused on research in auditory testing, rehabilitation, and cognitive engineering. Addressing key pain points in auditory testing and rehabilitation, she has established a complete technological system covering basic theory, prototype development, clinical big data validation, and industrialization transformation.

    She has led over 20 national and provincial/municipal-level fund projects, achieving multiple breakthroughs in areas such as objective hearing testing, AI-based auditory assessment, personalized tinnitus rehabilitation, and intelligent hearing aid technology. To date, she has published more than 100 papers in international authoritative journals indexed in SCI and EI, and holds over 70 invention patents.

    Her research outcomes have obtained multiple national medical device registration certificates and "Innovative Medical Device" approval certificates, with ongoing efforts to advance the registration approval and international certification of higher-category products.

    Leading her team, she has won numerous important honors, including the Gold Medal at the International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva, the WIPO Best Female Inventor Award, and the First-Class Award of the Invention and Entrepreneurship Award.

    In teaching, Gong Qin teaches the national first-class course Signals and Systems and the top-tier course at Tsinghua University Principles and Experiments of Electrophysiology for over 20 years. She has cultivated many young scholars active in the fields of auditory science and biomedical engineering. Committed to improving human auditory health through scientific innovation, she has translated intelligent hearing testing, rehabilitation, and assessment technologies from the laboratory to clinical practice and daily life.



  • Research and Product Development in Auditory System Testing, Rehabilitation, and Cognitive Engineering

    Key research and transformation achievements include:Accurate localization of complex auditory disorders, with multiple research projects successfully translated into industrial applications.

    Research Direction 1

    Addressing the global technical gap in the central mechanisms and rehabilitation theories of tinnitus treatment, she originally proposed and named three novel central mechanism theories for personalized, precise, and quantitative tinnitus sound therapy based on natural music backgrounds: "notch masking", "compensation masking", and "superposition masking". She solved the international challenge of ineffective treatment for high-frequency tinnitus.

    She developed the world’s first portable product integrating tinnitus detection and precise rehabilitation therapy, realizing precise detection + targeted rehabilitation + music therapy for tinnitus with hearing protection functions. The innovative technology of the product won the Gold Medal at the International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva (2022) and the National Invention Gold Medal (2020, 2024).

    She also developed tinnitus information analysis and management software for building a large tinnitus database. Based on artificial intelligence, she constructed the world’s first intelligent tinnitus assessment, diagnosis, and treatment system based on music backgrounds.

    The innovative technology was approved for the 14th Five-Year Plan National Key R&D Program (Key Special Project on Diagnostic and Therapeutic Equipment and Biomedical Materials), obtained two Class II Medical Device Registration Certificates and Production Licenses of the People’s Republic of China, and was recognized as a Jiangsu Provincial Class II Innovative Medical Device (Su Yao Jian Chuang Tong [2023] No. 0018). The Chinese Institute of Electronics appraised the innovative technology as "reaching the international leading level".

    Research Direction 2

    Targeting the theoretical mechanisms and key difficulties in objective and quantitative detection of auditory sensitivity (intensity and frequency sensitivity), she first revealed cochlear intensity sensitivity and frequency specificity under different stimulation modes based on stimulus-frequency otoacoustic emissions (SFOAE). She not only promoted the first clinical application of SFOAE but also pioneered the theoretical technology for objective and quantitative detection of auditory sensitivity based on combined dual-source OAE (SFOAE and DPOAE).

    She developed the world’s first "otoacoustic emission detector" for objective and quantitative prediction of hearing thresholds using artificial intelligence. The innovative technology has applied for PCT international patents, obtained approval as a Class II Innovative Medical Device (Su Yao Jian Chuang Tong [2024] No. 0024), and filed two US patents.

    It has passed national medical device safety and electromagnetic compatibility tests, and completed registration clinical trials at Chinese PLA General Hospital (301 Hospital), Beijing Friendship Hospital, and Shandong ENT Hospital, achieving significant economic and social benefits. It won the Gold Medal at the International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva (2019) and multiple national and provincial/municipal invention awards. To date, 13 invention patents (granted and applied)、3 software copyrights have been obtained based on this innovative technology, with 38 high-level papers published in SCI and EI indexed journals.

    Research Direction 3

    She took the lead in conducting innovative theoretical research on auditory rehabilitation and reconstruction for moderate to severe hearing-impaired patients. To improve the hearing aid effect and speech recognition rate of hearing aid users, she pioneered the theory of rapid detection of dual edges of cochlear "dead regions" and precise frequency shifting technology globally. She also developed theoretical technologies for adaptive wide dynamic range compression (WDRC) under different environmental noises and precise hearing aid fitting suitable for "tonal languages", and developed hearing aids with dual-end frequency shifting and WDRC functions for dead regions.

    To enhance the speech recognition rate of severe to profound deaf cochlear implant users for tonal languages, she took the lead in researching cochlear implant programming platforms and speech coding strategies suitable for Chinese intonation. She first proposed the optimal parameter selection method for real-time delayed beamforming and the adaptive dual-channel power spectrum difference method, becoming a pioneer in microphone array noise reduction technology. She broke through the international technical bottleneck of low-frequency roll-off using normalized beam adjustment and multi-parameter weighted compensation algorithms.

    Based on the innovative theories and technologies, she pioneered the development of the world’s first "real-ear analysis test system" and "portable high-end diagnostic audiometer" with dual-edge detection function for dead regions, winning two Gold Medals at the International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva.
